Guide for applicants, project and postdoc grants

Project title, in Swedish and in English (max 100 characters incl. spaces)

Provide a project title in both English and Swedish. The Swedish title is for the description of your project on the CIF website, if your application should be approved.

Academic subject

Choose from a list of academic subjects.

Head of Department (or equivalent)

Provide the name, email address, and phone number of the Head of Department or equivalent. You must obtain approval from the administrating organisation, ensuring that employment, premises, and equipment are available if the application should be granted. By signing with BankID, you confirm that the administrating organisation has approved the application. If you are the Head of the Department, you should provide details of another person responsible from administrating organisation.

Popular science summary (must be written in Swedish; 800 characters incl. spaces)

Describe briefly your project in Swedish. Also, describe how your project is relevant to sports and society. The summary will be published on the CIF website if your application is approved, so a broad audience should easily understand the text.

Keywords (max 100 characters)

Choose up to five keywords from the list. These will be used for approved applications that are published on the CIF website.

The summary of the research proposal should include a brief description of 1) the background, 2) the main questions to be addressed, 3) the work plan and methods, and 4) the importance of the project for the research area, particularly in terms of novelty and originality.

The purpose is to provide the reviewers with a concise project overview. This summary is also included in the scientific assessment of your application.

Provide name and contact information of co-applicants. A maximum of three co-applicants may be included in the application. Please specify only co-applicants of the present project.

Curriculum vitae for co-applicants (a total of 9500 characters including blanks)

Briefly describe the qualifications of the co-applicant(s), including publications. Note that the text field should include the CV of all co-applicants.

Collaboration plan

Describe briefly who does what in the project, in addition to individual contributions to the project. The collaboration plan is of importance for the assessment of feasability of the proposal.

Describe the relevance to and impact of your proposal on sport. A proposal must clearly demonstrate relevance to sport to be eligible for funding.

CIF uses a broad definition of sport. Read more about the CIF definition of relevance to sport.

Briefly describe the purpose and the specific aims of the proposal.

If the proposal is part of a larger research project, first very briefly describe the purpose of the larger project. Then describe more in detail the purpose and specific aims of the sub-project for which you apply for funding. Specify the contribution of the CIF funding to the entire project.

Give an account of previous relevant research, in addition to general concepts which led to the main questions to be addressed in the project. References are listed under the tab ”References”.

Reasons and considerations for studying women and/or men (1500 characters incl. spaces)

Regarding the project’s main questions, the applicant shall outline: 1) current research-based specific knowledge on women and men 2) lack of knowledge regarding women and/or men 3) reasons for studying women only or men only (if applicable).

Give a full description of the methodology and set of theories that are to be used. List available equipment and equipment that needs to be procured (to be specified in the budget). The work plan shall include a description of how the work is to be organised, any sub-projects or power calculations, and a timeline. Publications from the project should preferably be open access published. For postdocs: In addition, describe the research environment for the postdoc project, for example collaborations with other researchers (internal or external) of importance for the project

Ethical considerations (1000 characters incl. spaces)

Address relevant ethical considerations related to your project. Describe how you will manage any potential ethical issues that may arise. Additionally, explain the importance of conducting your research despite any identified ethical concerns.

Certain research projects require ethical approval. In your application, you should specify which approvals or permits are necessary and outline your plan for obtaining them. Approvals need not be submitted to CIF. If your application is approved, you, as the main applicant, are responsible for obtaining the required approval/permissions before starting your research.

Publication plan (postdoc application only; 1000 characters incl. spaces)

The postdoc application should include a publishing plan for the entire postdoc project. Publications from the project should preferably be published open access. Costs for open access publishing can be included in the budget for the extra grant the first year.

Describe your preliminary results related to the current project, if applicable. You cannot enter figures, tables or charts in the text fields. However, there is a possibility below to upload a PDF containing figures, tables or charts along with a short descriptive text.

Report progress in ongoing projects supported by CIF (1500 characters incl. spaces)

Do you have an approved research grant from CIF for which the availiability period has not expired? Then you should describe the progress of the project and also explain any major deviations from the submitted project plan.

Enter a maximum of 15 references (author, title and source) in relation to your research plan.

The grant can be used for salaries, operating costs and overheads. The budget should clearly specify how the CIF grant will be used.

Specification of costs

Please note that if the grant is part of a larger project, it is only the costs for which the CIF grant will be used that should be specified.

• Salary costs
  • Project grant: You can apply for salaries (incl. social security contributions) for yourself as the main applicant and other project staff members. Specify each person separately.
  • Postdoc grant: The grant is a fixed amount for salary costs (incl. social security contributions), and it is automatically generated. This should also cover the overhead costs that the salary cost generates.
  • A grant from CIF must not be used for stipends.
• Operating costs. Specify and justify. Examples:
  • Materials
  • Equipment
  • Trial subjects reimbursement
  • Publishing costs. Publishing and translation; in addition, cost for open access publishing.
  • Travelling costs. Costs for travelling and stay in relation to the project.
• Overhead costs.

Other financiers

Specify other financiers from which you have applied or have been granted funding (name of financier; amount applied for or received). No further specification necessary.

A brief description of the main applicant’s qualifications (a maximum of 6000 characters including spaces). Include only information of relevance for the application. The publication list should not be included in the CV, but listed under “Publications”.

Specify:

• PhD (year, university,  discipline/subject area, title of thesis)
• Post-doctoral appointments (year and placement)
• Associate professorship (year)
• Professorship (year)
• Current position, period of contract, proportion of research time.
• Reasons for periods of absence from active research. These include: parental leave, illness, civic/elected duties, military service, general and specialist medical training. Specify dates and number of months.
• Number of doctoral students that have completed a doctoral degree under your supervision
• Number of doctoral students currently under your supervision
• Opponent and member of examining committee for dissertations for the last 5 years (enter number)
• Scores if applicable: H-index excluding own citations
• Research funding for the last 5 years. Enter approximate amount:
  • as main applicant (SEK)
  • as a co-applicant (SEK)
• Invited keynote speaker to scientific conferences during the last 5 years (number)

List your publications from the last five years; include only those accepted for publication. Indicate with an asterisk (*) the five publications that are most relevant to the current project. The list of publications must be clear and structured. Write headings in capitals for each group of publications and mark the references with numbers within each group.

List the publications in the following order:

• Peer-reviewed articles and book chapters (enter the number of articles in the last 5 years)
• Peer-reviewed contributions to conferences, where results have not been published elsewhere (enter the number of articles in the last 5 years)
• For post-doctoral applications: Be sure to include articles from your thesis, or the title of the monography.
