Our mission

The Swedish Research Council for Sport Science (CIF) is mandated by the Swedish Government to initiate, coordinate and fund research, to disseminate research-based knowledge, to monitor and follow up on government support to organised sport, and to support the development of sustainable, accessible and inclusive sport, physical activity and outdoor recreation facilities that encourage physical activity for all.

Assignment

Monitoring of Government funding to organised sport in Sweden

The Swedish Research Council for Sport Science is tasked by the government to monitor state support for sport. This is conducted through quantitative assessments concerning the development of organised sport in Sweden based on a set of indicators, and qualitative in-depth analyses of specific issues determined by the government. Since 2022, the Council has also been tasked by the government to monitor disability policy in sports.

Assignment

Funding of Research with Relevance to Sport

A core part of our mission is to fund research with relevance to sport at Swedish Higher Education Institutions. Through open calls, we announce research grants for the generation of new knowledge on sport and physical activity, using a broad definition that encompasses elite sport, health, and societal conditions.

Facilities and Places

Since 2022, we have been mandated to serve as a knowledge platform that develops, compiles and disseminates high-quality knowledge and good practice, and supports those working with sport and outdoor recreation facilities. The assignment concludes in 2026.
